Academic research by professor Gudrun Bühnemann in Eighty-four Āsanas in Yoga, A Survey of Traditions, which includes Ghosh's 84 asanas demonstrated by Tony Sanchez, reveals there is no single source for 84 classic asanas. It is a mystical number that, traditionally, signifies completeness and, sometimes, sacredness. Some series of 84 asanas are for spiritual culture, while others, such as Ghosh's, are for the development of physical culture, focused on health and fitness.
