7 Steps to Asthma Control

YogasthmaYogasthma, Seven Steps to Asthma Control was a program implemented at George Washington Carver Elementary School to help the many students afflicted with asthma. Children were taught breathing and relaxation techniques, nutritional lunches were provided and an indoor, school-wide garden was installed to cleanse and oxyginate the air. Teachers and students learned to manage oncoming attacks.

1. BREATHE MINDFULLY: Exercise your lungs regularly to keep them healthy and strong. Breathe deeply through your nose to clean the air as it enters your lungs.

2. ASTHMA AWARENESS: Knowledge is power. Knowledge about asthma gives you the power to control it. What is the cause of your asthma? What triggers an episode? What can you do to relieve an episode?

3. MEDICATION: Know your medications and take it as directed. Ask an adult if you do not know.

4. PROPER DIET: You are what you eat. Your body uses the food you eat to grow, repair and protect itself. Eat fresh healthy foods and drink plenty of water. Avoid your trigger foods and too many sweet and starchy foods because they form mucus in your lungs.

5. MODERATE EXERCISE: Yoga is a great exercise because you can stretch your lungs and body without over exerting.

6. CLEAN PERSONAL SPACE: Fresh air is very important for breathing. Keep your personal space clean. Avoid things that can trigger an episode, like dust.

7. RELAXATION: The body repairs itself, grows and develops strength when it is resting. Relaxation reduces stress and restores energy. Focus on your breath and lungs when you relax.

Smile, you are in control of your asthma.
